Swordsquatch 2019

This year, I will once again be coaching at the Pacific Northwest’s premiere Historical European Martial Arts event.

Swordsquatch consistently features well run tournaments, a rich assortment of classes, and numerous opportunities for friendly sparring. It is an efficiently run event, suffused with a a sense of humor and fun.

In the past, I have taught seminars for fencers who wanted to learn wrestling. At last years event I noticed that, while these seminars were well received by those trying to learn to grapple, fencers who were on the fence were sometimes intimidated by the apparent athletic demands of wrestling or the prospect of big throws/falls. In contrast, what people who already knew how to wrestle wanted was a chance to spar.

This year I will be running a hybrid class/coached sparring session called: Crawl, Walk, Run. The goal will be to provide a setting that is truly welcoming of all skill levels, easing novices into grappling in a non-threatening and fun environment, while giving more experienced practitioners a chance to spar and discuss their art.

This is the premiere Historical European Martial Art event in the Pacific Northwest. It will include tournaments and free sparring with a variety of weapons, and a wide array of classes for novices and advanced practitioners alike.

The event has no shortage of talented instructors. I'm happy to say that I'm among them. I will be coaching two classes on Medieval German wrestling this year.

Avoiding danger,

Discouraging assault,

Escaping from attackers,

Fighting back!

Cost: $40

This seminar will begin with lecture and discussion focused on building an understanding of how criminal assaults tend to occur. Brainstorming and role-playing sessions will help to develop the situational awareness and social strategies to reduce the likelihood of being targeted for assault. The physical portion of the class will focus on building instinctual responses to counter a sudden assault and learning basic takedown and striking techniques.

A few things to keep in mind:

  • This will be a physically active class, so wear athletic clothing
  • Bring a heavy coat or jacket (to practice defense against a jacket grab)
  • Jewelry and piercings are not recommended

Ringen: The Art of Medieval Wrestling

400px-Egenolff_18.jpg

In Medieval culture wrestling was among the most popular sports. Young boys would have years of wrestling experience before they ever picked up a sword and that experience shaped how they fought with any weapon.

In this class, students will learn the fundamentals of Medieval folk wrestling and the high percentage takedown routes taught by Ott and other masters of the early German school.

Perfect for historical fencers who want to gain ability in the grapple, or any history nerds who want to learn to fight.

  • This will be a physically active class, so wear athletic clothing
  • Jewelry and piercings are not recommended
  • Street parking is extremely limited

I'm expecting to become a father in November, so I probably won't have time to coach another one of these classes this year. If you or someone you know is interested in this course, now's the time to check it out.

Swordsquatch 2017: Hold My Beer

This is the premiere HEMA event in the Northwest. I've been coaching Ringen seminars at Pacific Northwest HEMA gatherings since 2010 and I was blown away by the quality of the 2016 Swordsquatch. The people hosting this event do a fantastic job.

Sadly, I won't be able to be there this year, but a lot of awesome people will be there coaching and fighting. So, if you're interested in the Pacific Northwest HEMA scene I recommend that you go.

I hope to have some new curriculum to share at Swordsquatch 2018.

2017 Sub League Championship

I really have nothing to do with this event professionally, but it's great and I want to let people know it's going on. I do have friends and students who will be competing.

I competed in Sub League throughout my first three belts in Jiu-jitsu. I always had fun and the competition helped me to learn.

If you didn't compete in the preliminaries it's too late to qualify for this year's Championship tournament, but it will come around again next year. In the meantime it can be a fun event to watch.

To find out more go to www.SubLeague.com.
